Egmore Railway Station

Egmore the name of the neighborhood derives its name from the Tamil word "Ezhumbur," reflecting its deep-rooted ancient heritage. Historically, this area was a village situated on the northern banks of the Cooum River. Under the Chola Empire, Egmore, then known as Elumbur Nadu, served as the administrative center for the region. Later, the British colonial era marked a significant transformation for Egmore, particularly during the period from 1858 to 1947, which is often referred to as the "Golden Age of British Rule." During this time, Egmore experienced substantial development. One of the most notable landmarks from this era is the Egmore Railway Station, constructed between 1906 and 1908. This station showcases the Indo-Saracenic architectural style. The station was inaugurated on June 11, 1908, and has since been a crucial hub in Chennai’s railway network, connecting the city to various parts of India. Interestingly, the site where the station stands today was once home to the 'Egmore Redoubt,' a British fort used to store ammunition, highlighting its strategic importance during colonial times.
