Brief History
Red Hills has an impressive history. The first railway line was built from Red Hills to Chintadripet. This proposal was made in Madras in 1832 and built by Arthur Cotton. This line was laid to transport granite for road-building.
During World War II, the British built an airfield here, which the Royal Air Force used as an airbase. After the war, it remained abandoned until the airstrip was converted into a drag racing track. After the Madras Motor Sports Club was formed in the mid-1950s, Red Hills was selected to conduct its racing events. These events took place every year and continued until the late 1980s when the Madras Motor Sports Club built a new track at Sriperumbudur. Later on, the Indian Army recovered this land and has been using it as a military base for surveillance.
